Reflection
6
Hello everyone, sorry for late
posting my reflection. It’s because I’m busy completing my assignments and
presentations.
So, for Reflection 6, Madam Ng asked us to reflect
about ‘What have I discovered?’ for that whole week classes. We was discovering
about an article entitled, “Navigating the Bumpy Road to Student- Centered
Instruction”. Madam told us that we need to find 5 points on why students
dislike Student-centered Approach and 5 points on why teachers think it is an
effective approach. It was freaking hard to read and understand, yet I still
manage to get some points and ideas what it is all about.
That article reflects about the advantages and
disadvantages of Student-centered Approach. I think this would be a
contemporary approach that most teachers believe that’s an effective and the
best teaching approaches. Below showed the points that I discovered and more
specific about the questions Madam asked.
In my opinion, the reasons why some students think
students-centered instruction will not work for them are:

Firstly, the students think
student-centered instruction will be difficult to them because, if they
involving too much on active learning exercises, they will never get into
concentration about
the syllabus. For example, having too much of group discussion during lecture
period might wasting time because without knowing the syllabus, the students
won’t be able to discuss about any topic.
Secondly, the students will not able
to control
themselves if there is no lecturing in class. For example, when the students
were arguing with teacher regarding their opinion, they feel hard to get back
to the topic and might lose concentration.
Thirdly, during presentation or doing
group assignments, the students will not able to get fully information about the syllabus
and might not fully participate in the group. For example, during group
assignment or presentation, the students won’t have a balance part to present
and they only will perform based on their part only. So the rest part that they
didn’t involve will not be learned.
Fourthly, students find difficulties
to do their homework after they went back home. For example, if the teacher
didn’t lecture and more focusing in active learning, the student won’t be able
to get the knowledge and find difficulties to complete their homework.
Finally, students find themselves lack
of confidence
to involve themselves into student- centered learning during an active
learning exercises. For example, without knowing the correct information about
the syllabus, the student won’t brave out themselves to argue or share
information during discussion.
Now the reasons why teacher implement
student-centered instruction are:
1. It provide students
opportunities to learn independently from one another and guide them with their
skills in classroom for effectively.

2. Able to cover all the syllabus and
important topic that never been cover before.
3. Students are given handouts to
understand it and so that they can answer the exercises that were given by the
teachers.
4. Uses short quizzes at the beginning
of every period to see whether the students have read the material that were
given to students to read.
5. The exercises are more to critical
thinking and brainstorming, and it help students to understand and solve problem
more effective and problem solving.
Then Madam also asked us to reflect a
few sentence about the activities that we want to apply for our mock teaching.
I choose Creating Challenges which will be more suitable for Mathematics. My
activities are, group quizzes, Kahoot game and individual challenges. This will
ensure that by Creating Challenges, students will be more alert and concentrate
as well as will have interest and excitement to learn Mathematics.
Thank you. Have a nice day ahead.
